In this episode, your hosts interview Dr Carolyn Mair, who created and led the world's first Masters and Bachelors programmes to apply psychology within the broad context of fashion at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. Carolyn discusses what led her to create these academic programmes, why psychology and fashion need to be examined together, and the issues within the fashion industry that she is interested in addressing through psychology.
Carolyn is the founder of psychology.fashion, and is a consultant to the fashion industry, retail, NGOs, educators and the public providing behavioural insights, training, masterclasses and workshops, mentoring and career coaching. She is a Chartered Fellow of the British Psychological Society and the proud holder of the British Psychological Society’s Distinguished Contributions to Psychology Education Award. Her book, The Psychology of Fashion is one of Routledge’s top 10 Psychology books in 2018. Carolyn has published broadly in academic and popular media and is frequently interviewed for national and international TV and radio (including BBC World News TV, Sky News, ITV, London Live), featured in international press (e.g., The New York Times, The Times, Guardian, Telegraph, Independent, Daily Mail, Irish Times, Sunday Independent) and fashion magazines (including Vogue, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Grazia, Stella, Style, The Stylist, and Vanity Fair), as well as psychology and industry publications. Carolyn has a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, MSc in Research Methods Psychology and BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology and Computing. In 2017, after working in academia for almost 20 years, Carolyn left to establish her consultancy. Her most recent academic posts were Professor of Psychology for Fashion at London College of Fashion University of the Arts London (2012-2017). Prior to this she was Professor of Applied Cognitive Psychology at Southampton Solent University (2007-2012), In her earlier careers, she was a visual merchandiser, graphic designer, dressmaker and portrait artist.
